Back Story: James was always an outgoing young boy, and always tried to make new friends whenever the opportunity struck. That's exactly how he met his two best friends, Max Bay and Kamal Styles.
It was one day when he was five years old he spotted a young red fox, no older than him, with short black hair rolling a ball back and forth between him and a close by wall. The ball rolled over to James's feet and he eagerly picked it up, and walked over to the young fox. "Hi, I'm James," he shouted happily, with a large grin on his face. The red fox looked up at him shyly and responded, "Uhm.. hi.. I-I'm Max."
James smiled and sat down in front of him, the ball still in hand, "Nice to meet 'cha, Max!" James rolled the ball back to him, and waited for him to roll it back. Max looked at him and stared for a moment, then smiled and rolled it back. They continued to play like this until, in the corner of his eye, James noticed another young boy nearby. This boy was different, instead of other kids their age, he sat with his nose in a book, instead of playing around like most others in the area. His species was also hard to distinguish, from his vivid fur colors and oddly shaped ears, James was at awe as he stared at him, and quickly got up to say "hello."
Max, confused by his sudden movement, got up and quickly trailed behind James, though he had no idea where he was going. James came up to the boy and stared at him for a good minute, hoping he'd notice, before quickly shouting, "Hi! Whatcha' reading?" The boy looked up at him with an annoyed look on his face. He had golden yellow eyes, and wore thick, square framed glasses. "Why do you care," he responded, quickly turning his face back to the book.
James looked at him, frustrated by his lack of friendliness, "I was just asking! You don't need to be mean." Max poked his head over James shoulder to look at him, and his eyes hit the book, "Whoa.. that book doesn't have any pictures in it... You must be really smart..." To boy didn't take his eyes off the text. "I just like to read," he responded quietly, trying to concentrate.
James stood in front of him for a moment before the boy looked up, "...What do you want?"
"I wanna play," James responded enthusiastically.
"I don't really want to..."
"Oh come on! It'll be fun!"
"But, I just wanna read.. Can't you just leave me alone?"
"Nope! You're coming with us," and with that James took his hand and started to walk off with him, and Max in his other hand. "Hey, wait! I don't even know you! Let go of me," the boy shouted, trying to pull his hand out of James's grip. "I'm James, and this is Max," he said. "There, you know me! What about you? What's your name?"
The boy sighed, giving into James's persistence, "I'm.. Kamal." James stared at him for a moment before responding, "That's a funny name." Kamal simply ignored his remark and followed where he was headed, wherever that may be. From that day forward James led the three of them on various excursions, no matter how simple or childish they were, and the three of them soon became inseparable. It was soon enough that James's curious and outgoing personality got the best of him.
It was two years after the three boys had joined together that James obtained his electric powers. Like any other summer day, the three were at a small park not far from their homes. The park had an open field with plenty of hills, perfect for running around through. At the base of the highest hill was a large Oak tree that the boys usually sat under after a long day of play, and this was one of these days.
"That was fun," James shouted as he sat down, leaning against the trunk of the tree. Max and Kamal plopped down next to him, panting from running around for hours. "Yeah," Kamal responded with a smile. "We should play tag more often!" Max grinned and nodded in agreement, lying down under the tree as he let out a happy sigh. The trio laid under the tree until they heard the distant roar of thunder; a rare summer storm.
Max sat up instantly upon hearing the noise and looked in the direction it was coming from. "Uhh, g-guys," Max stuttered hesitantly. "We should probably go home..."
James opened his eye slightly, "Huh? Why?"
Max pointed to the upcoming storm, "That's why..."
The three looked in the direction Max was pointing, and their eyes widened. "I think Max is right, we should probably go home before it starts to rain," Kamal said, worried. "Oh, come on! What's rain gonna do? We can play in it," James said, excited for the sudden change in weather. Max's ears drooped in concern for his friend, "But.. I hear lighting and thunder... What if we get hurt..?"
"Nothing will happen! We'll be fine!"
"But... Are you sure?"
"Sure I'm sure! Just listen to me, and we'll be A-Okay!"
Max sighed, "Okay... If you say so..."
The rain began to pour down and James grinned, running out from under the safety of the Oak tree. Kamal and Max stayed under the leaves until James noticed them, "What're you guys doing? Come on!" Kamal looked around before responding, "Are you sure it's safe..?" "Yeah, are you sure? It's getting really dark now," Max said, his ears dropping some. James looked back at them, disappointed. "Oh, come on your guys! Is all you do worry? Can't we just have a little fun with this--" James was cut off by the sound of thunder, which was nearing close to them. Max jumped back and quickly clung to Kamal's arm, "I-I wanna go home!"
Kamal looked at Max, then back at James, "Come on, Max is getting scared! We should just go home." James sighed, "But it's not even that bad!" Kamal got ready to respond before he heard a loud crack, and then a bright bolt of lighting struck the top of the hill they had been standing by this entire time. James jumped in surprise, but then his eyes widened in excitement, "Whoa... I bet that left a really cool mark!" And with that, he began to head up to the top of the hill, right where the lighting had struck. Max let go of Kamal's arm and ran forward, "James, wait! You're gonna get hurt!" James looked back over his shoulder with a grin, "Don't worry! My brother always said, 'lighting never strikes twice in the same place'!" Max's ears drooped in worry over his friend, "But, James..!" But, it was too late he was already more than halfway up the hill, and soon came to a stop before a large black scorch in the once green grass.
He smiled and walked onto it, "This is... So cool!" He ran around in circles for a moment, enjoying his new discovery as most seven-year-old boys would. He came to a stop and looked up into the cloud-covered sky, letting the rain drop onto his face. He then looked back to his friends and shouted, "See? I told you nothing would happen!" Max and Kamal both sighed in relief, knowing that he was safe. "Okay, you were right. Now come back down here," Kamal shouted back. James chuckled, "Alright, I'm comin'!" He grinned as he began to take a step, but then it happened.
A bolt of lighting came crashing down, instantly striking James. He let out a loud scream as he fall to the ground and tumbled down the hill.
"James," Kamal shouted, running toward him. Max followed close behind, mumbling, "I knew this was a bad idea... We should have gone home..." They finally reached him, and he lying on the ground, breathing slowly. "Max, go get your mom," Kamal shouted. Max nodded and ran off to get his mom so they could help their best friend.
James woke up hours later in a hospital bed. He kept his eyes closed, but could hear the sound of familiar voices surrounding him.
"We told him not to do it, but he wouldn't listen..."
"Yeah, he said you told him it'd be okay!"
"What? I never said anything like that! If I was there I would have stopped him dead in his tracks."
"Yeah, but he said so..."
"I know he did, but James says a lot of things.. You can't believe every little thing he says, can you?"
There were soft footsteps, "Boys, you can't all be in here at once. He needs to rest."
Two voices responded at once, "Alright.." There were more footsteps, before silence. James felt a hand on his forehead heard and a soft sigh, "What are we gonna do with you, little brother?"
James slowly opened his eyes, "J-Jasper..?" Above him was his 11-year-old brother, Jasper. An orange hedgehog with long golden bangs and sky blue eyes. "How're you feeling?" He asked. James tried to sit up, but got pushed back down, "They said you should stay still.. You still need to rest..." James sighed, "Okay..." He looked around the room he sat in. It was empty besides a few chairs and bed he stayed in, and the equipment surrounding him. He looked down at his arms to see two thick bracelets on both of his wrists. He raised his arms and looked to his brother, "What're these?"
Jasper pondered for a moment, "I'm... Not sure. But, they said they're really important, so don't touch them." James nodded, "Okay..." He laid back down, letting the days pass by until he could finally go home. Everything was normal, aside from the new accessories he acquired on his wrists, which they soon improved to be less of a nuisance for him since he needed to wear them everyday to make sure the electrical currents running through his bodies were under control.
Even after the accident, James's outgoing, carefree personality never changed, and he still stayed the leader of the group, always taking the initiative, no matter what it may be.
